Bad Moms opened in theaters on July 28, 2016, and this week marks ten years since three worn out mothers decided they were done apologizing for wanting a life outside the school run and the packed lunches.
It was written and directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the writing pair behind The Hangover, making the jump from raunchy guy comedies to a mom led ensemble piece. Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn anchored the cast as three friends pushed past their limits, with Christina Applegate playing the perfectly put together PTA mom standing in their way.
The script came out of something more grounded than a writers room riff. Lucas and Moore built it by sitting down with real mothers and asking about their most embarrassing moments, their fears about dating again, and what they actually loved and resented about parenting. Kristen Bell has said the results felt so true to life that she was surprised two men had written it at all.
Bad Moms landed with critics at a cool 59 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a 60 on Metacritic, alongside a 6.2 on IMDb, numbers that undersell how sharply the film's tagline, Party like a mother, captured a mood nobody else in comedy was naming out loud. The chemistry between Kunis, Bell and Hahn does the heavy lifting, turning a fairly loose plot into something that plays less like satire and more like release.
That gap between a critical shrug and an audience embrace is exactly why Bad Moms is still worth returning to a decade later. It is not a film asking to be studied, it is one asking you to remember the last time you let yourself off the hook. Ten years on, that permission still holds up.
