From Overshadowed to Overpowered: Second Reincarnation of a Talentless Sage began streaming on Crunchyroll on 1 July 2026, releasing new episodes weekly on Thursdays; five episodes have aired so far.
The anime adapts Arata Shiraishi's ongoing light novel series, illustrated by Uodenim, with a manga version drawn by Kentaro running alongside it. Studio EMT Squared handles production under director Hisashi Ishii, who previously directed I'm Quitting Heroing and The Unaware Atelier Master for the same studio, both comedic light-novel adaptations built around an overpowered or underestimated lead, which makes him a known quantity for this specific flavor of wish-fulfillment fantasy.
The premise follows Eftal, a young man reincarnated into a fantasy world who fails to master magic and dies humiliated by his own weakness, then reincarnated a second time four centuries later, retaining all his prior knowledge and power in an era where magic has broadly declined, instantly making him the most capable sorcerer alive. He enrolls at a magic academy to finally claim the recognition denied him the first time around. Shuichiro Umeda voices the adult Eftal, with Reo Osanai, Haruka Shiraishi, Emiri Kato and Daisuke Hirakawa rounding out the academy cast.
Anime News Network's Summer 2026 Preview Guide covered the premiere, and its critics were pointed rather than kind. Rebecca Silverman found Eftal's self-pity undercutting the redemption arc the story wants to sell, and flagged the creature designs and a foreshadowed slave-girl subplot as poor signs for how the show handles its supporting cast. Lucas DeRuyter questioned the show's central logic, arguing that people who actually circle greatness rarely obsess over being the best the way Eftal does, and raised concerns the series leans on tired isekai gender conventions stacked atop an already familiar inferiority-complex plot. James Beckett was blunter still, calling the premise formulaic and the direction lifeless, with forgettable character designs; all three reviewers found the second episode no improvement.
