Backrooms arrived in theaters from A24 in May, became the studio's highest-grossing release ever, and after 46 days in cinemas is now available to rent or buy on Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Google TV and YouTube, with its digital window opening on July 14.
A subscription streaming date has not been confirmed, so for now this is a title to rent rather than one included with any streaming plan. An extended "Everything Must Go" cut, with roughly fifteen minutes of additional footage and a post-credits scene, played theatrically in July and is being folded into later home releases.
Kane Parsons directs from a script by Roberto Patino and Will Soodik, built around a therapist, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who follows a missing patient into the Backrooms: an unending, jaundiced maze of empty office rooms and corridors that exists just outside ordinary reality. Renate Reinsve and Finn Bennett round out the principal cast. The film is a direct feature expansion of Parsons' own creation: he posted the first "The Backrooms (Found Footage)" short to YouTube in January 2022 at sixteen, and it grew into a nearly 190-million-view phenomenon that defined a strain of internet liminal-space horror before A24 backed him to direct its live-action leap.
The strongest case for watching now is Parsons' handling of tone rather than plot mechanics. His command of mood over scale recalls early David Lynch, with industrial sound design and a preoccupation with flickering electricity doing the unsettling work usually left to jump scares. The new entities designed specifically for the film are the weaker element: nothing invented for the feature quite matches the dread of the original web series' most viral creature.
This suits viewers already familiar with liminal-space horror or Parsons' original shorts, and anyone drawn to atmosphere-driven horror that prioritizes sustained dread over gore or jump-scare rhythm. It is less suited to viewers who want a tightly plotted mystery, since the film leans on mood and world-building over answers.
