This week's slate opens with a neighborhood getting yanked out of time. In The End of Oak Street, a cosmic event tears an ordinary suburban block away from 1982 and drops it somewhere the Platt family can barely recognize, let alone survive. It arrives to rent or buy on Prime Video and Apple TV on Tuesday.
The film is a genuine swing for David Robert Mitchell, the director behind It Follows and Under the Silver Lake, who trades hushed dread for a family adventure crawling with dinosaurs. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor play the parents holding the group together, and the film has landed better than a dinosaur swing from this director had any right to, sitting at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, a number that suggests this one is worth catching rather than skipping.
Friday's big theatrical release is Zach Cregger's Resident Evil, and it takes a deliberately different approach to the franchise. Rather than centering a familiar face from the games, the story follows Bryan, an ordinary medical courier whose delivery run turns into one horrifying night of survival. Cregger has said he wanted the film to feel like actual survival horror gameplay, all clumsy, chaotic terror rather than franchise box ticking, and he cut most of the comedy after test audiences felt it undercut the scares.
Friday also brings The Scandal, a Joseon era drama where a secret proposal unravels into a dangerous game between a gifted noblewoman, a famed lover and an unsuspecting lady. Alongside it, The Weight follows a father separated from his daughter and pushed into a high stakes gold smuggling job for a shot at freedom, and Bad Apples watches a struggling teacher's choices spiral after one of her students is hurt.
Thursday adds Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the latest entry in the true crime anthology, tracing the ax murders that made Lizzie Borden infamous.
It is a week that swings from prehistoric suburbia to viral outbreak to Victorian scandal, so there is a lot to add to the watchlist either way.
