Twenty years ago, Little Miss Sunshine put a bright yellow Volkswagen bus on the road and turned a single beauty pageant into one of the defining road trip comedies of its decade.
The setup is disarmingly simple. A family with more baggage than they'd like to admit piles into a broken down van and drives across the country so young Olive can compete in a children's beauty pageant in California.
What made it land wasn't spectacle. It was a family falling apart and holding together in the same breath, funny in exactly the moments it probably shouldn't be, and quietly devastating in the ones that follow.
Twenty years on, it has aged into comfort viewing rather than nostalgia, the kind of film that still gets passed along to someone who hasn't seen it yet.
