Mutiny is available to rent or buy digitally from today, 8 September, on Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home, eighteen days after it opened in theaters on 21 August. It is still playing on some screens, so this is the premium window rather than the end of the run, at a rental price closer to a cinema ticket than a streaming subscription.
Jason Statham stars as Cole Reed, a billionaire's head of security who witnesses his boss's murder, gets framed for the crime, and boards a cargo ship chasing the people responsible, only to uncover a conspiracy that runs far wider than one killing. Jean-François Richet directs, bringing much of the same tough, physical sensibility he brought to his last film, the Gerard Butler thriller Plane.
The setting is the point. Richet shot on location in Malta and the UK rather than leaning on green screen, and it shows in how claustrophobic and physical the fight scenes feel: corridors too narrow to swing in, decks that pitch, machinery that becomes a weapon. The Die Hard and Under Siege comparisons are obvious and fair, and Statham's commitment to confined, practical action is what carries the film past a plot that is mostly an excuse.
It is a film for a specific mood: unpretentious, propulsive action with a body count and not much interest in being anything else. Ninety-five minutes, one ship, one man who should not be on it. That economy is the recommendation.
