"Minions & Monsters" opens in wide theatrical release on July 1, 2026, following an Annecy International Animation Film Festival premiere on June 21.
Universal originally slated it for June 30, 2027, then moved it up a full year into the July 1, 2026 date, a sign of confidence from Illumination and Universal in a franchise that has never missed at the box office. It arrives as the seventh entry in the Despicable Me universe and the third built specifically around the Minions on their own.
The film is set in Old Hollywood during the silent-era-to-sound transition, and follows minions James and Henry as they become movie stars, watch their careers collapse when talkies arrive, and respond by trying to make their own monster picture. Pierre Coffin, who has directed or co-directed every prior Minions-focused feature, directs again from a script he co-wrote with Brian Lynch. Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch and Bobby Moynihan voice the Hollywood figures around the minions.
The premise is the most specific pitch a Minions film has had: rather than another quest for a villain to serve, it's a showbiz-collapse story tied to a real historical hinge point in film history, using that transition as the engine for slapstick.
