The first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday is out, and it confirms what had only been reported until now: Robert Downey Jr. returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time as Doctor Doom rather than Tony Stark.
What's new here is the first real look at how the Russo brothers are staging the reunion, bringing together Chris Evans's Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, and Anthony Mackie's Captain America alongside Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards and Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm from the Fantastic Four.
The film is written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely and continues directly from Avengers: Endgame, the 39th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It brings the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X Men, and other corners of the multiverse into direct conflict with Doom for the first time.
It's worth being measured about what a two minute trailer can prove, but assembling this many heroes under one villain, and bringing Downey back in a completely different role, signals how large a swing Marvel is taking with this one.
