Toy Story 5 is the headline arrival, and it is a home-viewing one: after two months in theaters it lands on digital purchase and rental on Tuesday 18 August, with Disney+ to follow on 23 September. The story is set two years after Toy Story 4. Bonnie's new obsession is a tablet named Lilypad, and the sudden competition for her attention forces Buzz, Woody and Jessie back into a job they thought they had already finished. Andrew Stanton directs, co-writing with Kenna Harris, and Greta Lee voices the tablet itself. It sits at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it plays as a genuinely emotional continuation rather than a victory lap.
Sunday brought Lanterns, HBO's entry into the DC Universe built around two very different Green Lanterns, with new episodes weekly on HBO and HBO Max through 4 October. Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan, the seasoned legend, opposite Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, the new recruit, and the pair get pulled into a murder investigation rooted firmly on Earth rather than out among the stars. Chris Mundy runs the show, and the premise leans more into a grounded procedural than cosmic spectacle, which is a deliberate swerve for a superhero property this size.
Monday's arrival is Por Você, a Brazilian telenovela premiering on TV Globo, following a doctor named Bela who becomes guardian to her late best friend's four children after a car accident. It is a smaller, quieter premise than the rest of the week's slate, built around grief and sudden responsibility rather than spectacle.
Friday is stacked at the theater. Mutiny puts Jason Statham aboard a cargo ship as a security chief who uncovers a conspiracy far bigger than the job he signed up for. The horror franchise continues with Insidious: Out of the Further, in which a young mother discovers she can cross into the same nightmare dimension that has haunted the series since it began. And Spa Weekend rounds things out on a lighter note: three friends whose relaxing getaway spirals into chaos the moment their most chaotic friend shows up uninvited.
The split, then: Toy Story 5 is a rental or purchase from Tuesday, Lanterns is the week's one subscription pick on HBO Max, Por Você is broadcast television, and Mutiny, Insidious and Spa Weekend are theater-only from Friday. For a family night, the tablet-versus-toys sequel; for a weekly appointment, Lanterns; for a Friday out, the Statham thriller if you want momentum and Insidious if you want to be scared.
